Teen Poetry and Art Contest 2007

The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) kicks off its 6th Annual Teen Poetry and Art Contest, and invites local teens, age 12 to 18, to submit an original poem or drawing. The top three winning poems at each branch library will be included in Voices in Verse, an anthology published by OCPL. Winning artwork will become the front and back cover designs for the book.

Entry forms will be available February 13 through March 17 at all OCPL branches. The deadline for entries is March 17, 2007. Poems must be typed, no longer than 30 lines, and attached to an entry form. Artwork must be an original black and white design and can be either hand drawn or computer generated. Artwork must be no larger than 8.5 x 11" in portrait orientation only.

A complete set of contest rules is available at all branches of OCPL, as well as on the library's website at www.ocpl.org. Teens may also enter the contest at www.ocpl.org/poetry/poetry.asp.

Community members, educators, and/or local business people will judge entries. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 2-8, 2006. Voices in Verse will be distributed to winning poets, artists, and libraries. For details please contact the Orange County Public Library branch nearest you or the library website.

We Love Our Volunteers!

The Aliso Viejo Library welcomes and encourages volunteers. They help the library flourish. We are fortunate to have a large number of quality volunteers. These positions are ideal for anyone interested in people, books, and the community. We are constantly recruiting new people. Many of our volunteers are from the local high schools. Often, students tell us that they have grown up loving the library and volunteering is just a natural progression for them. Other students contribute their volunteer hours for different service organizations. Both the library and the students benefit from their gift of time.

The Friends of the Library bookstore provides another opportunity for volunteers. The bookstore is open Monday through Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 12:30 pm to 4:30pm. Its operation is totally dependent on volunteers. Proceeds from the bookstore provide enhanced programs, better collections and a more attractive library.

If you are interested in volunteering contact Candice Gallette, Volunteer Coordinator, at 949-360-1730.
