Special Thanks to Our Friends of the Library
You may have noticed recently how shabby our beautiful library was looking. Many of our chairs were split at the seams with foam seeping out. It was getting quite depressing. This sad state of affairs did not go unnoticed by our Friends of the Library. Sure enough they stepped in and got our chairs reupholstered. This noble endeavor was not inexpensive, but the AV friends felt they couldn't let it go any longer. The result is lovely and fresh new fabric on our chairs. Of course the friends subsidize so much more than keeping up our appearances. They just purchased the new Modern Scholar series on CD. Have you ever wanted to go back to college, but didn't want to write those pesky papers, well now you can. We have complete college courses taught by world renowned professors on subjects ranging from comparative religion to music appreciation. Thank you Friends! If you are reading this, I fervently hope you will consider volunteering either in the Friend's bookstore or joining the Friends of the Aliso Viejo Library Board, which requires a minimum time commitment.
I am very excited about the library's first Philosophy discussion group starting on February 23rd at 7pm. Aliso Viejo Library's mission is to promote life long learning and provide outlets for community building. I like to think of our library as a commons, much like the village common of old. We may not be a tract of land, but we are in a centrally located spot, belonging to and used by a community as a whole. I believe our new Philosophy group adds to this theme. In addition to philosophy we will be providing a venue for High School bands to play, an Aliso Viejo Reads One Book program, again adhering to our mission of community building. In the future you will see many opportunities for civic involvement at the library, such as community issues forums. Civic or otherwise I feel it is vital to be involved in your library and community if only to flex our democratic muscles!
