Steinbeck Library to reopen!

Even though Salinas citizens were alerted to the possiblity that their library would be closed if they didn't pass two tax measures, they still rejected both measures. So the libraries closed and Salinas became the largest city west of the Mississippi without a library. As soon as everyone realized their loss, the people rallied together. I guess the irony (not just because it's the Steinbeck Library) of using the library as a polling place to vote on whether or not to even have a library struck a chord! Actors and activists, read-ins and bakes sales all in support of a beloved institution that sometimes gets overlooked by our obsession with "getting and spending!" The people have spoken and on November 8th measure V, a half cent sales tax, was approved by 61% of the voters. So the next you think to yourself I don't need a library, I can use Google (not a good idea), or my kids are grown, so what do I care, take a moment and resist those selfish impulses and ponder the greater good.
